Righto.  

I guess the best thing is probably keep doing what has been done all
along.  

One script (ie. findfw.sh) to find the correct firmware files for the
device installed.

Another script (ie.fwextract.pl) for stripping the firmware.

(fyi:  I'm not a perl hacker, but I can write pretty good bash -- if I
get lots of playtime on my hands, I'll do my best to try to rewrite
findfw.sh -- ie. I bust a leg. :-)
