Another thing I notice is that I have two sets of firmware for cx25840. I think I extracted these files from the latest pvr usb2 driver from hauppauge following the instructions. All files match (as reported by diff) except v4l-cx25840.fw.

from the package media-tv/pvr-firmware :

$ l /lib/firmware/archive/
total 697
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root      8 Nov 25 22:53 ./
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root      8 Dec  8 20:47 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 262144 Nov 25 09:20 v4l-cx2341x-dec.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 262144 Nov 25 09:20 v4l-cx2341x-enc.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 155648 Nov 25 09:20 v4l-cx2341x-init.mpg
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  16382 Nov 25 09:20 v4l-cx25840.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   8192 Nov 25 09:20 v4l-pvrusb2-24xxx-01.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   8192 Nov 25 09:20 v4l-pvrusb2-29xxx-01.fw

I extracted:

$ l /lib/firmware
total 294
drwxr-xr-x  4 root root      8 Dec  8 20:47 ./
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root    155 Jan 17 07:52 ../
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root      8 Nov 25 22:53 archive/
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root      6 Dec  8 12:34 generated-by-me/
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 262144 Dec  8 20:47 v4l-cx2341x-enc.fw
-rw-r--r--  1 root root  12559 Dec  8 20:47 v4l-cx25840.fw
-rw-r--r--  1 root root   8192 Dec  8 20:47 v4l-pvrusb2-24xxx-01.fw
-rw-r--r--  1 root root   8192 Dec  8 20:47 v4l-pvrusb2-29xxx-01.fw

I think while I was trying to get it to work, I must have extracted the firmware from latest online drivers in desperation and never changed back. Do I need to change it back to the firmware from the package media-tv/pvr-firmware?

Subject: [pvrusb2] audio pops and cracks in the recordings

Hi,

I am using 20061119 snapshot with 2.6.19.2 kernel. I get pops and cracks in the sound. My settings are as follows:

$ cat ctl_audio_layer/cur_val
Layer II

$ cat /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*/ctl_volume/cur_val
53710

$ cat /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*/ctl_audio_bitrate/cur_val
224 kbps

$ cat ctl_audio_mode/cur_val
Stereo

$ cat ctl_audio_emphasis/cur_val
No Emphasis

$ cat ctl_audio_crc/cur_val
No CRC

I have these put into the /etc/init.d/local.start:

echo "10485760" > /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*/ctl_video_bitrate_peak/cur_val
echo "8388608" > /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*/ctl_video_bitrate/cur_val
echo "Constant Bitrate" > /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*/ctl_video_bitrate_mode/cur_val
echo "224 kbps" > /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*/ctl_audio_bitrate/cur_val
echo "53738" > /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*/ctl_volume/cur_val

One thing I noticed is that most of the pops/cracks happen in the shows which are telecast in HD 5.1 sound. I am using the regular analog cable to record my shows using mythtv. All (mythtv mixer, recorder, transcoder, pvrusb2) volume levels are set at 82%. I hear the pops in the .mpg file, so its not the transcoder.

Does anybody have any idea about this problem? It has ruined most of recordings because most of the content that I typical record is telecast in HD 5.1.

Thanks a lot for your help,
-devsk
PS: should the ctl_audio_layer be Layer III ?
