The problem that was in early versions of 2.6.27 would result in a 
catastrophic hang inside the driver early during initialization - 
requiring a reboot to recover.  It's very unsubtle and there's plenty of 
discussion about that in the list archives.  I presume that's the 
symptom you are talking about?  (Because if it isn't then this is 
something new I have not heard about.)
