FYI, I have implemented a variation of this idea now.  It is checked 
into my subversion repository and will (barring any showstopper bugs) be 
in the next snapshot.  The new feature is that the set of inputs are now 
additional device attributes.  The driver will use this information to 
select a valid default and it also will no longer make available inputs 
which don't make sense for the device.  I was already thinking about 
this before your e-mail because 2 of the devices that the driver handles 
now don't have an FM radio and I wanted to stop the driver from 
advertising its erroneous availability anyway.  Your device's situation 
(i.e. no tuner at all) is a variation on the same theme.  So the 
solution I have coming up covers all of this.  It also includes a device 
attribute now to account for devices which might have a digital tuner...
