Hi,

Following Mike's suggestion, I decided to try install & configure
mythtv (from Debian unstable). Everything went OK, except that in
mythtv-setup, I can't get the program to scan for channels -- the
error message is "failed to open the card" and then "Programmer Error,
see console".

The console output is:

pu100877:/var/log/mythtv$ mythtv-setup
Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed

What did I miss?

mplayer /dev/video0

works, as a mythtv user too.

Thanks,

Tamas

PS.: Being in Hungary, I could not set up a video source, but I don't
think that is related to this problem.
