seems like I jumped the gun a bit. I tried unpluging the device (from power
and the computer) and waited a sec and plugged it in. Now I get this log:

Jan 7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using
ehci_hcd and address 6
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 pvr2_hdw_create: hdw=f2a48000
Jan 7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 Driver unit number is 0, name is
pvrusb2_a
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 subsys_stream_mask: 0x3c000
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 pvr_probe(pvr=f73fb280)
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 pvr2_hdw_setup(hdw=f2a48000) begin
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 pvr2_upload_firmware1
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 request_firmware failed for '
pvrusb2.f1'
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 Failure uploading firmware1
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 pvr2_hdw_setup(hdw=f2a48000) done,
ok=1 init_ok=0
Jan  7 23:02:08 localhost kernel: pvrusb2 Device firmware (re)load executed;
it should now reset and reconnect.

it seems to be a bit better!
that request_firmware failure worries me, so I still may re-rip and rebuild.
Unless anyone knows better ;-)
