Per a recent reader poll on linuxjournal.com's Magazine:

Linux System Administration by Tom Adelstein and Bill Lubanovic
(O'Reilly 2007)

ISBN-10: 0596009526
ISBN-13: 978-0596009526

When I first dropped into Linux about 10+ years ago, I bought several of
these types of books and is extremely well worth the $30 via amazon.com.
(Some people buy updated versions yearly.)

But should at least have one of these in your personal library. These
types of basic books detail all these basic questions.

Another good tool is using Google. ie. enter the error stdout within
quotes into the google box, ie: Linux "Permission Denied" will probably
list the solution or bug report. :-)

One more thing, your local library will more then likely have at least
one of these types of books on their shelves. If it's a large library,
it'll probably have a few more to choose from. (Wow, looks like you
have at least nine libraries to choose from out thar'!)
